L'Interdit Absolu

L'Interdit Absolu opens cooler and more austere than the L'Interdit name usually promises. Guatemalan cardamom and Bulgarian lavender arrive first, aromatic and slightly medicinal, with neroli lifting the edges so the start reads bracing rather than sweet. That herbal opening is the tell: this flanker is built to resist the prettiness of the line it belongs to. The heart is the familiar Givenchy white bouquet, Indian tuberose against jasmine sambac and orange blossom, but it sits lower in the composition and carries a waxy, almost sulphurous weight rather than a bright bloom. What genuinely separates it is the base. Bulgarian tobacco absolute brings a dry, leafy warmth, rum adds a boozy sweetness that never tips into gourmand, and patchouli with Haitian vetiver grounds everything in earth and root. Performance is the strongest part of the pitch. Expect six to eight hours on skin with sillage that stays readable at arm's length well into an evening, which suits its own positioning as an intense concentration. Wear it after dark. It is a cold weather scent that flatters autumn and winter, works for dinner, formal evenings and dates, and feels overdressed in an open plan office or anywhere warm. If the original L'Interdit reads as a white floral with a shadow behind it, Absolu inverts the balance and lets the shadow lead.
