Tom Ford's Oud Wood helped popularise oud in Western perfumery, pairing a smooth, non-medicinal oud with rosewood, cardamom and sandalwood for a refined, unisex woody scent that avoids the sharper, smokier facets of traditional oud. SMEL.' version opens on oud, rosewood and cardamom, moves through a sandalwood, vetiver and tonka bean heart, and settles into amber and vanilla - a close conceptual match to the designer original's smooth-woods profile. Because Oud Wood's appeal lies in a comparatively simple, polished woody-spicy accord rather than dense, layered complexity, this dupe reproduces the general character reasonably well. Where it falls short is finish: the original's tonka-vetiver base has a distinctive silky, long-lasting quality that this version renders thinner and shorter-lived, fading into a fainter amber-vanilla trace well before the day is out. Still, it's a competent, wearable woody-oud alternative suited to office wear, formal settings and dates across the colder months.
