Aedes de Venustas
New York niche house known for incense-tinged, materially rich compositions with an artistic slant.
Aedes de Venustas began in March 1995 as a perfume boutique on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, New York, founded by Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl. The name translates from Latin as "temple of beauty," and the shop quickly became known for curating hard-to-find niche lines, emphasizing personalized service and exclusive scents that were not stocked in department stores. For its 10th anniversary in 2005, Aedes collaborated with L'Artisan Parfumeur on a signature home fragrance, Parfum d’Ambiance, which proved successful enough to inspire a personal fragrance adaptation in 2008, Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum by L'Artisan.
In 2012, Aedes launched its own independent perfume line under the Aedes de Venustas name. The first in-house fragrance, Aedes de Venustas Signature (also called Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum), was composed by Bertrand Duchaufour and is built around rhubarb and tomato leaf with incense and vetiver, framed as a modern chypre structure without oakmoss or patchouli. Subsequent releases such as Iris Nazarena (2013), Oeillet Bengale (2014), Copal Azur (2014), Palissandre d’Or (2015), Cierge de Lune (2016), Grenadille d’Afrique (2016), Pelargonium (2017), and Musc Encensé (2018) reinforced the brand’s focus on distinctive raw materials and textural incense effects.
In 2021 the collection was relaunched with new packaging and the addition of 16a Orchard, named after the store’s then-new location, followed by Encens Japonais that same year, Corfu Kumquat in 2022, and Amnesia Rose and Café Tabac in 2023. Retailers and reviewers highlight the line’s reliance on high-quality ingredients, often combining unusual botanicals with resinous, smoky, or mineral facets. The brand remains independently owned and continues to operate both as a niche perfumery and as a fragrance house in its own right.
A niche, luxury house known for incense compositions.
The brand started as a boutique primarily known for curating other niche houses before moving into its own fragrances via a 2005 home scent and a 2008 collaboration with L'Artisan Parfumeur. With the launch of the in-house line in 2012, Aedes shifted toward artist-led, material-focused compositions built around unusual notes and incense. The 2021 relaunch modernized the packaging and expanded the range with place-inspired and story-driven scents like 16a Orchard and Café Tabac, while keeping the emphasis on distinctive accords rather than market-driven trends.
Aedes de Venustas is a strong choice if you want thoughtfully constructed, incense-tinged niche perfumes that do not smell like mainstream releases. If you need easy compliments or budget-safe blind buys, this house will likely feel too expensive and too idiosyncratic.
