Van Cleef & Arpels entered perfumery in 1976 with First, composed by Jean-Claude Ellena, marking it as the first fragrance from a jewelry house. The brand originated from a 1896 partnership between Dutch stone cutter Alfred Van Cleef and his brother-in-law Charles Arpels, who opened their debut boutique on Paris's Place Vendôme in 1906. Pierre Arpels described First as a scent mirroring their jewels: discreet but precious, fleeting but very present. Fragrances draw from nature's grace, linking high jewelry to fine perfumery, with lines like Collection Extraordinaire featuring scents such as Oud Blanc (2020) by Anne Flipo, built on oud accord, vanilla pods, incense, aldehydic white musks, Turkish rose absolute, and dates.
